Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 1 large egg Provides structure and moisture for the dough.
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence Adds depth to the flavor profile.
  • 1 cup plain flour King Arthur all-purpose preferred; can substitute with almond flour for gluten-free.
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter Richness and flavor enhancer; can replace with coconut oil for dairy-free.
  • 1 cup water Hydrates the dough for perfect consistency.
  • 2 tbsp sugar Sweetens the dough; can be reduced or swapped for sugar substitutes.
  • 1 tsp salt Balances the overall sweetness and enhances flavors.
For the Coating
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon powder Freshly ground preferred for aromatic flavor.
  • 1 cup white sugar For delightful coating; can use coconut sugar as a less refined option.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • mixing bowls
  • piping bag
  • medium saucepan

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine water, butter, salt, and sugar. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally. Once boiling, reduce heat and stir in flour until a smooth dough forms.
  2. Let the dough rest for 4-5 minutes. Add the egg and vanilla essence, mixing until smooth.
  3. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) and spray the basket with nonstick cooking spray.
  4. Transfer the dough into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip. Pipe small churro shapes into the basket, ensuring they are spaced apart.
  5. Lightly brush the churro tops with melted butter and air fry for 10-12 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Mix white sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Toss cooked churro bites in this mixture until coated.
  7. Serve immediately, optionally with dipping sauces like warm chocolate or honey.
