Ingredients
  

For the Marinade
  • 1/4 cup Hoisin Sauce Can substitute with BBQ sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Honey Agave syrup or maple syrup can be used
  • 3 tablespoons Soy Sauce Use tamari for gluten-free
  • 1 teaspoon Five-Spice Powder Use a mix of cinnamon, cloves, and star anise if needed
  • 3 cloves Garlic Fresh garlic is ideal
  • 1 teaspoon Red Food Coloring Optional for color
For the Chicken
  • 2 pounds Boneless Chicken Thighs or Breasts Thighs are juicier, breasts are leaner

Method
 

Marination and Roasting
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, honey, soy sauce, five-spice powder, minced garlic, and red food coloring if desired. Add the chicken and coat well. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  2. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with foil.
  3. Remove the chicken from the fridge, place on the prepared baking sheet, and reserve any leftover marinade for basting.
  4. Roast for about 25-30 minutes, basting with reserved marinade every 10 minutes until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (75°C).
  5. Allow the chicken to rest on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before slicing.
  6. Slice the chicken and serve over steamed rice or in bao buns.
