Marination and Roasting
- In a large bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, honey, soy sauce, five-spice powder, minced garlic, and red food coloring if desired. Add the chicken and coat well. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with foil.
- Remove the chicken from the fridge, place on the prepared baking sheet, and reserve any leftover marinade for basting.
- Roast for about 25-30 minutes, basting with reserved marinade every 10 minutes until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (75°C).
- Allow the chicken to rest on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before slicing.
- Slice the chicken and serve over steamed rice or in bao buns.
