Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Begin by peeling and chopping the sweet potatoes into even chunks, about 1 to 2 inches in size.
  2. Place the chopped sweet potatoes in a large pot and fill it with enough water to cover them completely. Bring to a rolling boil, then reduce to a gentle boil. Cook for 15-20 minutes or until fork-tender.
  3. Once tender, carefully drain them in a colander and return to the pot. Allow them to steam for about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Using a potato ricer or sturdy hand masher, mash the sweet potatoes until smooth, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Gradually incorporate the warmed butter and half-and-half into the mashed sweet potatoes, mixing for about 1-2 minutes until creamy.
  6. Mix in salt and black pepper to taste, adjusting as needed.
