Ingredients

For the Cheese Balls
  • 8 oz Goat Cheese Log Use a log rather than crumbles for the rich and creamy center.
  • 1 cup All Purpose Flour Acts as the first layer in the dredging process for optimum coating.
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder Enhances flavor; substitute with onion powder for a different taste profile.
  • 1/2 tsp Kosher Salt Balances the flavors; fine sea salt can be used as a substitute for versatility.
  • 1 large Egg Serves as a binder, ensuring the coating adheres well to the cheese.
  • 2 tbsp Milk Adds moisture to the egg mixture; for a lactose-free option, use non-dairy milk.
  • 1 cup Panko Breadcrumbs Offers a light and crispy texture; regular breadcrumbs can work but won’t achieve the same crunch.
  • 1 tbsp Fresh Thyme Provides a fragrant herby flavor; fresh parsley or oregano can substitute nicely.
  • 2 cups Canola Oil Used for frying; any neutral oil with a high smoke point will work effectively.
Optional Dipping Sauces
  • 1 tbsp Honey Drizzle over the cheese balls for a sweet contrast that enhances the flavors.
  • 2 tbsp Fig Preserves Pairing with these preserves adds a sweet, fruity dimension to each bite.
  • 1 cup Marinara Sauce A classic pairing, offering a savory touch that complements the crispy fried goat cheese balls perfectly.

Equipment

  • Deep pot or Dutch oven
  • thermometer
  • Parchment Paper
  • shallow bowls

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Slice your goat cheese log into bite-sized pieces about one inch in diameter. Roll each piece to form smooth balls and place on parchment paper.
  2. Freeze the cheese balls for at least 30 minutes to help them hold their shape during frying.
  3. Prepare your dredging station with three shallow bowls: one for flour mixed with garlic powder and salt, the second for whisked egg and milk, and the third for panko breadcrumbs and thyme.
  4. Coat each cheese ball in the flour mixture, then dip in the egg mixture, and finally roll in the panko breadcrumbs.
  5. Freeze the coated cheese balls on the tray for another 30 minutes.
  6. Heat canola oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C). Monitor the temperature closely.
  7. Fry the cheese balls in batches for 30 seconds to 1 minute until golden brown.
  8. Drain the fried cheese balls on paper towels and lightly season with kosher salt. Serve warm with dipping sauces.
